So many writers today haven't a clue what constitutes a Gothic novel in its classic from. If you haven't read any of Margaret Barkers Books this one and her "Temple Theology An Introduction" are a good place to start. The second half is tense and builds up to an unexpected violent scene and while the ending is predictable it is also satisfying. As it is, this is not a book I would recommend at this time. On any stride, the horses hooves could have found a hole and McCutcheon would be seriously injured or (if lucky) killed outright. Our 3-year-old great grandson loves this cute book.
