I completely fell in love with the premise, and the characters had a lot of potential, but I think the author really leaned on the fact that this is a young adult novel. The format of the book is more or less like a text-book. As adults, we have learned that history is always a selective interpretation of past events, and that the most effective communicators often break the established conventions. I have made and kept notes about people, places, events, and animals over the years, always secretly hoping I could someday retire and be a Story Teller. It is total garbage, literally. One of the drawbacks with this series for some people is that the books can not be read as stand alone books.
